De plus, pour un m\u00eame \u00e9tat d&rsquo;oxydation, le niveau de dissociation d&rsquo;une esp\u00e8ce varie en fonction du pH. L&rsquo;arsenic, par exemple, est un m\u00e9tal lourd qui poss\u00e8de plusieurs niveaux d&rsquo;oxydation (-3, 0, +3, +5) mais qui se pr\u00e9sente majoritairement sous les formes arseniate (As\u2075\u207a) et arsenite (As\u00b3\u207a) dans les eaux naturelles. La charge \u00e9lectrique de l&rsquo;ars\u00e9niate est n\u00e9gative (-1 ou -2) \u00e0 des niveaux de pH compris entre 5 et 7.<\/p><p>La figure 2 montre que l&rsquo;ars\u00e9nite (As\u00b3\u207a) se dissocie \u00e9galement dans l&rsquo;eau. \u00c0 un pH de 7, H\u2083AsO\u2083 est l&rsquo;esp\u00e8ce dominante tandis que H\u2082AsO\u2083\u00af repr\u00e9sente une petite fraction (+\/-1%) alors que la contribution de HAsO\u2083\u00b2\u00af et AsO\u2083\u00b3\u00af est insignifiante. Comme la charge \u00e9lectrique de l&rsquo;ars\u00e9nite est neutre dans la gamme de pH des eaux naturelles (6-9), cette forme n&rsquo;est pas facile \u00e0 \u00e9liminer. La conversion en ars\u00e9niate est un \u00e9l\u00e9ment essentiel de tout processus de traitement de l&rsquo;arsenic.<\/p><p>La figure 1 montre que H\u2082AsO\u2084\u00af est l&rsquo;esp\u00e8ce dominante de l&rsquo;ars\u00e9niate \u00e0 pH =3. La figure 2 montre que H\u2083AsO\u2083 est l&rsquo;esp\u00e8ce dominante de l&rsquo;ars\u00e9nite \u00e0 pH =3. Le rapport des concentrations ars\u00e9niate (As\u2075\u207a)\/ars\u00e9nite (As\u00b3\u207a) pour diff\u00e9rents potentiels redox \u00e0 pH 3 peut \u00eatre calcul\u00e9 par l&rsquo;\u00e9quation de Nernst. Lorsque ces rapports de concentration d&rsquo;ars\u00e9niate (As\u2075\u207a)\/ars\u00e9nite (As\u00b3\u207a) sont calcul\u00e9s pour toute la gamme de pH et que nous tra\u00e7ons la concentration \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9quilibre thermodynamique en fonction du pH et du potentiel redox, nous pouvons d\u00e9finir les zones de pr\u00e9dominance des diff\u00e9rentes esp\u00e8ces de l&rsquo;arsenic, comme le montre la figure 3. Les lignes du diagramme de Pourbaix d\u00e9crivent l\u2019\u00e9tat d\u2019\u00e9quilibre des diff\u00e9rentes esp\u00e8ces d\u2019un m\u00eame \u00e9l\u00e9ment. Dans les zones situ\u00e9es entre les lignes, l\u2019esp\u00e8ce repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e est pr\u00e9dominante. Outre le potentiel et la valeur du pH, les concentrations d\u2019\u00e9quilibre d\u00e9pendent \u00e9galement de facteurs tels que la temp\u00e9rature, la pression et la concentration de l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment. Les diagrammes de Pourbaix sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement donn\u00e9s \u00e0 temp\u00e9rature ambiante, \u00e0 pression atmosph\u00e9rique et \u00e0 des concentrations molaires de 10\u00af\u2076. La modification de l\u2019un de ces param\u00e8tres produit un diagramme diff\u00e9rent.<\/p><p>Les diagrammes de Pourbaix sont utilis\u00e9s, par exemple, dans les \u00e9tudes de corrosion, les g\u00e9osciences et les \u00e9valuations environnementales.
