Solving VOC Outlet Issues in Tank and Truck Cleaning with Activated Carbon

  • Container Unit

A containerised solution for quick and easy installation. This complete system is ready to go and secures compliance with air emission limits. It is designed to treat the air and vapours from tankers use for transportation of solvents and volatile chemicals.

  • Scrubber & Filters

The system contains a scrubber for the removal of the majority of the contaminants, followed by two mobile activated carbon air filters type Ecoflow™ C1 in series. These filters are each filled with 1 M3 of activated carbon, eg, Resorb™ GXB.

  • Safety first: CO measurement and N2 Inertisation

When working with a variety of volatile chemicals in different concentrations, operational safety is important. To secure safe operation A CO measurement is installed to detect possible hot spots in the carbon bed, connected with a N2 purge to inertisize the system.

  • AC Carbon Handling

We offer an activated carbon exchange service by our local Jacobi service team on a periodic basis. This exchange comprises the emptying, checking and filling of the system in a clean and efficient way. Experience learns that the carbon needs to be replaced 2-3 times per year depending on the process intensity and concentrations.

  • Activated Carbon Reactivation

Recycling of the saturated carbon by thermal reactivation in our facility is offered. Reactivation and the use of reactivated material is not only a sustainable way of working but also provides the benefit of working in a more cost efficient  way.

With the ever increasing demands on quality from customers, tank cleaning is an important process to meet customers’ requirements and safety expectations.

Depending on the contaminants and the tank content (solvents, chemicals, foodstuff and other products), the cleaning can be done with hot or cold water, sometimes with the addition of acidic or alkaline cleaning agents. In some cases though, effective cleaning can be achieved only by using surfactants.

The amount of aqueous effluent depends on the applied cleaning process and when cleaning a 25 m³ tank can be from as little as a few hundred litres total for a full wash process. The nature of the aqueous effluent changes from one tank to another, depending on the original content of the tank and cleaning agents used. Water treatments systems are in place to treat the waste water in a responsible and effective way.

Along with the water also the air vapour coming from the process needs to be cleaned. Many tankers contain solvents or other volatile chemicals. Depending on their nature, the concentration of these chemical components in the vent air can vary significantly, but often exceed the discharge limit.

Since 2015, a law has been in place in Germany (known as TA LUFT), stating that the exhaust air from all tank cleaning systems must not exceed 20 mg/Nm³ contaminants. Due to this stricter legislation, many current treatment systems are insufficient and need to be upgraded. Jacobi Services is a solutions provider that helps tank cleaning companies choose the most cost effective environmental treatment solutions for air emissions and water effluent streams.

Case Study:

Jacobi was recently contacted by a tank cleaning company with following air emissions:

  • Flow: 1000 Nm3/h
  • Operating time: 12 hours per day
  • Operating temperature: 30C
  • Relative humidity: 65%
  • Impurities to be removed from vent air: All sorts of solvents depending on truck loading.

During the discussions with the tank cleaning company, it became clear that they want to focus on their core processes and were looking for a complete treatment system that could cope with the changing conditions and concentrations without the continuous need of manpower. Also the application of the proven safety systems was key. The Jacobi service team developed a containerised solution that can be applied by other tank cleaning companies too.
